Xcode validates project build settings with each new Xcode release and
issues warnings to apply recommendations. We ignore these. This patch
sets the validated Xcode version to the maximum so that Xcode will
not longer issue these warnings.
Apple's iOS App Store does not permit an app to link to naked dylibs.
Instead, these must be placed in frameworks, which are embedded in a
dynamic version of MoltenVK.xcframework.
- Use Xcode to directly generate a MoltenVK.framework for each platform,
and remove create_dylib*.sh scripts.
- Move static XCFramework, containing libMoltenVK.a static libraries,
to Package/Latest/MoltenVK/static/MoltenVK.xcframework.
- Generate dynamic XCFramework, containing MoltenVK.framework dynamic
libraries, in Package/Latest/MoltenVK/dynamic/MoltenVK.xcframework.
- Add macro MVK_VERSION_STRING to create version string at compile time,
use it to validate the CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION build setting at compile time,
and use it at runtime instead of mvkGetMoltenVKVersionString() function.
- Add -w to OTHER_LDFLAGS to dynamic framework builds to suppress
spurious linker warnings of the type
"ld: warning: no platform load command found in '...', assuming: iOS"
issued from the new linker introduced in Xcode 15.
- Add MoltenVK-MacCat Xcode target and MoltenVK Package (MacCat only)
Xcode scheme to avoid building dynamic MoltenVK.framework for the
Mac Catalyst platform, because Xcode does not support doing so.
- Always run MoltenVK build scripts, to ensure all components are
added to the XCFrameworks, and MoltenVK/Package is always refreshed,
even if code compilation is not required.
- Cube demo link to dynamic MoltenVK.framework through
dynamic/MoltenVK.xcframework, instead of to naked libMoltenVK.dylib.
- Update the version of Volk used by the Cube demo, to support
loading MoltenVK from dynamic frameworks inside Volk.
- Update README.md and MoltenVK_Runtime_UserGuide.md documents.
- Update MVK_PRIVATE_API_VERSION to 40.
- Fix make install to install /usr/local/lib/libMoltenVK.dylib on macOS (unrelated).
- Remove unused MTLAttributeStrideStatic declaration prior to Xcode 15 (unrelated).
- Xcode now supports building dylib for iOS Simulator
(but unfortunately not yet tvOS Simulator).
- Restore support for iOS Simulator destination in recent update to
Cube demo that uses dynamic-linking, by using script build phase
to overwrite the iOS build of MoltenVK with the iOS Simulator build.
- Statically expose vkGetInstanceProcAddr(), even
when MVK_HIDE_VULKAN_SYMBOLS is enabled.
- To support Volk, link Cube demo dynamically to libMoltenVK.dylib
instead of statically to MoltenVK.xcframework.
- Add Volk repo to fetchDependencies script and
ExternalRevisions/Volk_repo_revision file.
- Cube.xcodeproj modify header paths, use of Volk,
and remove old and unused files.
- Update Demos/README.md to explain that Volk requires MoltenVK
be built with build setting MVK_HIDE_VULKAN_SYMBOLS enabled.
- MVKInstance support aliasing function name in one extension to a
function in another extension, to allow MVK_HIDE_VULKAN_SYMBOLS to
work with extensions promoted to another extension, but not to core,
and remove additional duplicate functions that were promoted to 1.3,
but were breaking use of MVK_HIDE_VULKAN_SYMBOLS.
- Document the name of the MoltenVK driver layer.
- Support future multiple string members in MVKConfiguration.
- Add static assert on number of string members in MVKConfigruation.
- Rename global mvkConfig() to getGlobalMVKConfig().
- Rename global mvkSetConfig() to mvkSetGlobalConfig().
- Remove unused mvkPrintSizeOf() macro. (unrelated).
- Trim trailing spaces from Markdown documents because
it causes double-spaces in some Markdown readers (unrelated).
In a recent Metal regression, Metal sometimes does not trigger the
[CAMetalDrawable addPresentedHandler:] callback on the final few (1-3)
CAMetalDrawable presentations, and retains internal memory associated
with these CAMetalDrawables. This does not occur for any CAMetalDrawable
presentations prior to those final few.
Most apps typically don't care much what happens after the last few
CAMetalDrawables are presented, and typically end shortly after that.
However, for some apps, such as Vulkan CTS WSI tests, which serially create
potentially hundreds, or thousands, of CAMetalLayers and MTLDevices, these
retained device memory allocations can pile up and cause the CTS WSI tests
to stall, block, or crash.
This issue has proven very difficult to debug, or replicate in incrementally
controlled environments. It appears consistently in some scenarios, and never
in other, almost identical scenarios.
For example, the MoltenVK Cube demo consistently runs without encountering
this issue, but CTS WSI test dEQP-VK.wsi.macos.swapchain.render.basic
consistently triggers the issue. Both apps run almost identical Vulkan
command paths, and identical swapchain image presentation paths, and
result in GPU captures that have identical swapchain image presentations.
We may ultimately have to wait for Apple to fix the core issue, but this
update includes workarounds that helps in some cases. During vkQueueWaitIdle()
and vkDeviceWaitIdle(), wait a short while for any in-flight swapchain image
presentations to finish, and attempt to force completion by calling
MVKPresentableSwapchainImage::forcePresentationCompletion(), which releases
the current CAMetalDrawable, and attempts to retrieve a new one, to trigger
the callback on the current CAMetalDrawable.
In exploring possible work-arounds for this issue, this update adds significant
structural improvements in the handling of swapchains, and quite a bit of new
performance and logging functionality that is useful for debugging purposes.
- Add several additional performance trackers, available via logging,
or the mvk_private_api.h API.
- Rename MVKPerformanceTracker members, and refactor performance result
collection, to support tracking and logging memory use, or other measurements,
in addition to just durations.
- Redefine MVKQueuePerformance to add tracking separate performance metrics for
MTLCommandBuffer retrieval, encoding, and execution, plus swapchain presentation.
- Add MVKDevicePerformance as part of MVKPerformanceStatistics to track device
information, including GPU device memory allocated, and update device memory
results whenever performance content is requested.
- Add MVKConfigActivityPerformanceLoggingStyle::
MVK_CONFIG_ACTIVITY_PERFORMANCE_LOGGING_STYLE_DEVICE_LIFETIME_ACCUMULATE
to accumulate performance and memory results across multiple serial
invocations of VkDevices, during the lifetime of the app process. This
is useful for accumulating performance results across multiple CTS tests.
- Log destruction of VkDevice, VkPhysicalDevice, and VkInstance, to bookend
the corresponding logs performed upon their creation.
- Include consumed GPU memory in log when VkPhysicalDevice is destroyed.
- Add mvkGetAvailableMTLDevicesArray() to support consistency when retrieving
MTLDevices available on the system.
- Add mvkVkCommandName() to generically map command use to a command name.
- MVKDevice:
- Support MTLPhysicalDevice.recommendedMaxWorkingSetSize on iOS & tvOS.
- Include available and consumed GPU memory in log of GPU device at
VkInstance creation time.
- MVKQueue:
- Add handleMTLCommandBufferError() to handle errors for all
MTLCommandBuffer executions.
- Track time to retrieve a MTLCommandBuffer.
- If MTLCommandBuffer could not be retrieved during queue submission,
report error, signal queue submission completion, and return
VK_ERROR_OUT_OF_POOL_MEMORY.
- waitIdle() simplify to use [MTLCommandBuffer waitUntilCompleted],
plus also wait for in-flight presentations to complete, and attempt
to force them to complete if they are stuck.
- MVKPresentableSwapchainImage:
- Don't track presenting MTLCommandBuffer.
- Add limit on number of attempts to retrieve a drawable, and report
VK_ERROR_OUT_OF_POOL_MEMORY if drawable cannot be retrieved.
- Return VkResult from acquireAndSignalWhenAvailable() to notify upstream
if MTLCommandBuffer could not be created.
- Track presentation time.
- Notify MVKQueue when presentation has completed.
- Add forcePresentationCompletion(), which releases the current
CAMetalDrawable, and attempts to retrieve a new one, to trigger the
callback on the current CAMetalDrawable. Called when a swapchain is
destroyed, or by queue if waiting for presentation to complete stalls,
- If destroyed while in flight, stop tracking swapchain and
don't notify when presentation completes.
- MVKSwapchain:
- Track active swapchain in MVKSurface to check oldSwapchain
- Track MVKSurface to access layer and detect lost surface.
- Don't track layer and layer observer, since MVKSurface handles these.
- On destruction, wait until all in-flight presentable images have returned.
- Remove empty and unused releaseUndisplayedSurfaces() function.
- MVKSurface:
- Consolidate constructors into initLayer() function.
- Update logic to test for valid layer and to set up layer observer.
- MVKSemaphoreImpl:
- Add getReservationCount()
- MVKBaseObject:
- Add reportResult() and reportWarning() functions to support logging
and reporting Vulkan results that are not actual errors.
- Rename MVKCommandUse::kMVKCommandUseEndCommandBuffer to
kMVKCommandUseBeginCommandBuffer, since that's where it is used.
- Update MVK_CONFIGURATION_API_VERSION and MVK_PRIVATE_API_VERSION to 38.
- Cube Demo support running a maximum number of frames.
- Only log performance stats on FPS logging if logging style is explicitly
set to MVK_CONFIG_ACTIVITY_PERFORMANCE_LOGGING_STYLE_FRAME_COUNT (unrelated).
- DemoView implements NSViewLayerContentScaleDelegate protocol to update
[CAMetalLayer contentsScale] property when moved between screens.
- Log contentsScale value during swapchain creation.
- Remove a few unnecessary inline declarations.
- Update minimum Xcode deployment targets to macOS 10.13, iOS 11, and tvOS 11,
to avoid Xcode build warnings.
- Add support for MTLLanguageVersion3_0 enumeration.
- Build efficiencies:
- Build scripts create_dylib.sh and gen_moltenvk_rev_hdr.sh
only run if build dependencies require it.
- Packaging and copy_to_staging.sh scripts are too complex to define dependencies,
and are fast, so configured to run every time, to avoid build warning.
- Replace use of deprecated sprintf() with snprintf().
- Replace use of deprecated kIOMasterPortDefault with kIOMainPortDefault.
- Support old-style GPU debug capture only if building for earlier minimum
deployment targets, to avoid deprecation warning.
- Update minimum Xcode deployment targets of Cube demo to macOS 10.14, iOS 12,
and tvOS 12, to avoid Xcode build warning regarding MTLSharedEvent in .
- Update README.md document regarding minimum Xcode deployment targets.
LunarG is planning to retire the LunarG/VulkanSamples repository.
Remove dependency to it, and remove the affected Hologram and API-Samples demo apps.

KhronosGroup/Vulkan-Samples repository for official demo apps.
Add link to Vulkan SDK Getting Started doc to README.md and
MoltenVK_Runtime_UserGuide.md documents.
Add Github CI badge to README.md, and remove Travis CI badge.
Make document notices of use of Markdown into comments
so they are invisible when using a Markdown reader.
Define MVK_MACCAT build macro and use it to conditionally compile code to align
with build features and capabilities of Mac Catalyst platform on macOS 11.0+.
Treat Mac Catalyst as minor variation of macOS 11.0.
Update documentation.
Currently only support Mac Catalyst on macOS 11.0+, to avoid complexities of
deselecting iOS features and capabilities for Mac Catalyst on previous macOS versions.
Mac Catalyst (and Simulators) require use of XCFrameworks.
Currently unable to generate a dylib for Mac Catalyst.
Combine MoltenVKSPIRVToMSLConverter and MoltenVKGLSLToSPIRVConverter
frameworks into a single MoltenVKShaderConverter framework.
Update corresponding directory structures, symlinks, scripts, and build paths.
Update MoltenVK code to use new framework name for headers.
Add symlinks in API-Samples demo to support legacy
MoltenVKGLSLToSPIRVConverter header paths.
In addition to simplifying shader converter code and build management, the
use of only one shader converter framework fixes a race condition within Xcode,
prior to Xcode 12, when multiple targets use the same dependency XCFramework.
Remove EXCLUDED_ARCHS from all Xcode projects to allow fat platform libraries to be built.
Script copy_lib_to_staging.sh no longer breaks fat libraries into single-architecture
libraries, and simply copies fat file to XCFramework staging area.
This permits support for arm64 on macOS, and arm64e on iOS and tvOS.
Creating a Simulator dylib containing both x86_64 and arm64 (Apple Silicon)
architectures is not currently supported by Xcode, so Simulator dylibs are skipped.
- Delete fat library and framework scripts and templates.
- MoltenVK build package now only includes one XCFramework, and separate platform dylibs.
- Modify fetchDependencies and Makefile targets to not build fat libraries,
and to build simulators separately than platforms instead.
- Script package_moltenvk.sh now copies dylibs for all built platforms.
- Consolidate package_all.sh and delete package_one_os.sh.
- Swap names of copy_lib_to_staging.sh and copy_to_staging.sh scripts.
- Cube demo now uses MoltenVK as XCFramework, and support Simulator builds.
- Hologram demo now uses MoltenVK as dylibs from new packaging location.
- API-Samples demo now uses MoltenVK as XCFramework.
- Update documentation.
Create fat builds of static, dynamic & framework libraries if both iOS
and simulator versions have been created from separate manual Xcode builds.
Refactor scripts for creating fat libraries to reuse across projects.
Add MVK_BUILT_PROD_DIR to replace use of BUILT_PRODUCTS_DIR in most scripts
to allow flexibility across per-platform compilation.
